Beer Thug Brewing Co Opening Soon in Bell, CA

They would be able to get their basic certifications, get them behind the bar for a week, get them in the brewhouse for a week, and pretty much give them a whole lot of training in a 30-day process. So that’s our next stage for how we’re going to adjust the club and further the education that I originally envisioned. Velasco-Favela started Mujeres Brew Club as an educational series, bringing in speakers to talk on everything from the history of craft beer to how to make beer. Lia Garcia has managed tasting rooms and done graphic design for many breweries. She’s helping to reimagine the gender and race of the craft beer industry. Mujeres Brew House, San Diego’s first Latina-owned brewery, opened in 2020 with a handful of collaborative brews and guest taps.

So trying to understand budgeting and cost and all that kind of stuff is kind of where we’re at now and kind of like stabilizing a little bit. Other examples include Buenas Vibras Toronja Blonde Ale, the brewery’s first beer that gets a squeeze of grapefruit to make it easy-to-drink, smooth, light, and crisp. For Velasco-Favela that meant brewing beers with the ingredients, fruits, and flavors of their Mexican culture. From the very beginning, Mujeres Brew House has been a brewery made by women with beers brewed for women. When Helvitiq, a Swiss publishing house, proposed “Beer Hiking” in August 2022, Flashman wasted no time hitting the trails, the breweries and the keyboard.

So we launched it and hoped for the best and yeah, we sold out immediately. That was the beginning of knowing there was a need for a space for women in craft beer. And not only just a space to learn, but to empower them to get jobs in the craft beer industry.

‘We're Making History': Latinas in Barrio Logan Open Brewery During Pandemic

It was beautiful to see all of these women get together and build relationships and learn about craft beer. Her husband, David Favela, is the co-founder of Border X Brewing, the first Latino-owned brewery in San Diego. Velasco-Favela and Davila were able to create a beer club for women, hosted at Border X Brewing. Mujeres Brew House is the first Latina-owned brewery in San Diego. The project was created by Carmen Velasco-Favela and Esthela Davila. However, the two women were creating a beer space for women before that.

And while Velasco-Favela never planned to open a women’s brewhouse, the opportunity seemed too perfect. Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, “Those streets were mean,” recalls Mr. Preciado in an article published by the Los Angeles Times. Enduring the troubling and discriminating inequities people of color face in ghettos, Mr. Preciado took solace in craft beer and its community. Olson will keep creating, brewing the way for the next generation of women to create their own beer. She has brewed at different breweries all over San Diego and even created some cider not too long ago. While Mujeres Brew House aims to empower women, it is not just for women.

“I wanted to find a balance with the beer, so we rotate the ones we create,” Velasco-Favela said. The positive impact of having a woman come into their establishment and feel like they belong while sipping a beer is the driving force for Velasco-Favela and Davila. “Doing anything that focuses only on women is, I think, kind of risky because you never know what people are going to think,” Velasco-Favela said. Mujeres Brew House is an incorporated non-profit collaboration between Border X Brewing, Mujeres Brew Club, and progressive community gallery space Bread & Salt.

She and Davila realized they did not have to be afraid about coming off too strong with their Latinidad. They could create a space for women’s empowerment while also showcasing their love for their culture. To help with this, the brewery has invited muralists to come in and do pieces that reflect Latino culture. My plan for winter or fall is to create a 30-day internship program for the girls in the club.

The city’s proximity to Mexico (downtown San Diego is located approximately 14 miles north of the border) has allowed cross-border collaborations and influence to thrive. But despite profiting from these culturally rich assets, San Diego’s 150-plus breweries, as in the rest of the United States, remain largely white male-owned and operated. The vision behind Mujeres Brew House is about providing balance to this skewed community.

The minute we were able to serve a beer, people were here to support. Honestly, I think just the fact that it was the first all-female-led brewery in San Diego was just very powerful and impactful to San Diego. I hired [former employee] Esthela [Davila] as a host as she had been very involved in the craft beer industry. She was Latina, so I figured she’d be the right person to bring on to start this project. We had over 50 women coming to each session for this six-month series.

We grew up with them, it’s a cultural thing, and it’s what we know. She is currently the head brewer at Mujeres Brew House, an all female-run and Latina-owned brewery. Besides inventing some of the most creative beers in Southern California, Olson and Mujeres are also creating a safe space for women and people of color to enjoy craft beer. According to co-founders Carmen Favela and Esthela Davila, Mujeres Brew House will be managed by women and for women with the intent of breaking down barriers of entry into the beer scene.

Your going to have to take a nice walk every time you want more drinks. Favela and co-founder Estela Davila, who serves as tasting room lead, eventually branched out from the club to create Mujeres Brew House. However, she received a lot of support from the women's club and several families who told her that they were excited about the reopening. Opening their own establishment where they could serve craft beer is a dream they had been planning for months and almost did not see come true. A group of enterprising Latinas decided to open a brewery in the middle of the pandemic in Barrio Logan and make history. This project was produced by Priscilla Maldonado as a published learning experience in JMS 550 Digital Journalism, part of the Journalism and Media Studies Program at San Diego State University.

The brewery opened nine years ago in San Diego and co-owns Mujeres Brew House. Mujeres Brew House in Barrio Logan is providing women a space to be able to sell their tamales and take all their profits home, which they say nowadays during inflation is a big help. Favela said they hired a Mexican food truck to serve food at the brewery as they have a large outdoor space that allows Mujeres Brew House to fully operate outside. “I started painting the wall this Mexican pink; it was so bright but I loved it,” Velasco-Favela said. Once we had this space, the next step was trying to learn how to stabilize and operate a brewery.

Since then, Edgar has amassed over 16,000 followers on Instagram where he posts chugging videos and brewery trips. He would go on to collaborate as a contract brewer with Death Row Records, BeerAdvocate, Beer Zombies Brewing Co., Crowns and Hops Brewing Co., King Brewing Co. and 8Bit Brewing Co. “We have been buying our supplies for our tamales and we have noticed a decrease in sales, and it is impacting us financially because we have to put the money upfront,” said Maria Cadenas, owner of Mi Cocina Carrillo. “We’re helping each other find our voice and stand out in a crowd of bearded brewers,” she said with a laugh. Olson recently created an Ube Double IPA that was purple, in honor of the late singer Selena, as well as a Tamarindo Hefeweizen.
