When the designers first saw the 19th-century chinoiserie commode in the south of France, “our hearts were pounding,” says Meg Harrington. Sassy brass chairs in a leopard print with a 1960s vibe flank a black commode, while a Louis Philippe mirror reflects a triple orchid. A 19th-century painted barometer provides “crusty glam.” A series of playful Raymond Debieve mixed media on paper from the ’60s and ’70s delivered “magic on the walls,” said the purveyors of artful living. The entryway’s statement piece was a gift from the architect in the form of a two-story oculus serving as the home’s central axis. Within the dramatic eye, Wyeth Ray Interiors installed a Paul Ferrante galaxy gold chandelier over a skirted table and round rug. Soft white walls and trim served as a backdrop for black and white contemporary art in the marbled foyer.

Designer Janie Wilburn honored the European château-style home and its setting by accentuating the existing paneling in her tailored master suite. “We were inspired by the house itself and its situation on the lake,” she says. Within the panels, she placed a scenic Cowtan & Tout grasscloth, Treasure Flower, depicting fish and lily pads in pale blue-green for a subtle yet sophisticated reference.
“I wanted to make a space that was a cheerful guest room for someone to enjoy the mountain view,” she says. Inspired by Palm Beach Regency style, she draped the bed wall in pink and green. Thibaut’s Honshu print, a current take on chinoiserie, pops up again as the duvet. “I loved using bright colors and vintage furnishings, mixed white textiles and furniture to balance my use of bold colors,” she says.
Pink was the obvious choice for the grasscloth ceiling and hummingbird fabric and wallcovering by Thibaut. A French Provincial dresser from Scott Antique Markets provides the foundation for a Louis Philippe gold mirror. “I kept it pretty and feminine by balancing antiques with more updated pieces,” she says. She then added textures with linens, velvets and metals, such as antiqued gold and silver, in the chairs and stools.
